When it comes to taking the step to a healthier lifestyle, you might be met with feelings like it’s too late to start, nervous that you don’t know what you are doing or even that you just can’t muster the energy or motivation to drag yourself there.
As someone who has tried and failed to make the gym stick, there are so many ways in which you can turn this chore into a habit that you are actually looking forward to doing at the beginning of each day.
I don’t like to tell you there will be a moment when your inner voice will try and get you to stay in the comfort of your own home but the feeling of guilt will also make you feel so happy when you ignore the voices and do what you know you’re supposed to.
Set Realistic Goals
It’s hard to not put lots of work in and not get immediate results but understand that things take time and all good things come to those who wait. So begin by creating small and realistic goals. For example, if you want to get better at cardio, specifically running, try and set timing goals for distances you feel comfortable doing.
There is a current trend called couch 5k, which is where over the space of 8 weeks you run twice a week and by the end of 8 weeks you will have run 5k. There are so little things you can do to build more confidence.
Find a Workout You Enjoy
Choose activities that you find fun and engaging. What made it hard for me was that it was just boring doing weight training and I wish I was back in school doing more fun-filled activities that got my heart rate going. So I thought, why not? Look for clubs, whether it be running clubs or finding a friend who wants to take up the same hobby.
There are so many things you can do that motivate a healthy lifestyle.
Support Systems
Having a gym buddy or a strong support system really makes the difference. If I didn’t have a boyfriend that pushed me to do more healthier things, I honestly don’t think I would have been able to stick to it as long as I have.
These support systems don’t always have to be close family and friends; they can be people you meet in the gym or even on social media who share the same passions. It keeps you excited and motivated throughout the whole process. You begin wanting to do more so you, in a sense, can show off.
Dress To Make You Feel Good
Having both comfortable and flattering gym outfits helped me step out of the front door in the early hours to the gym. Whether it’s because I like to feel good on the outside or I just really enjoy my clothes, I have no idea, but I truly think it makes a huge difference to your motivation and the likelihood of you attending.
There are so many women’s gymwear brands nowadays that you are truly spoilt for choice when it comes to styles, shapes and sizes.
Do Your Research
There are so many platforms and fitness content creators who love what they do, providing you with educational lessons on how to perfect your form, which exercises to do on a back day and so forth. There is widely available and so much information so take full advantage of creators you feel connect with your fitness goals and explain things in a way you relate to.
Celebrate Achievements
You are allowed to treat yourself here and there; it’s the best way to have a healthy relationship with fitness so reward yourself when you hit milestones; this could be finishing a 10k without stopping or going down a pants size.
You can reward yourself in whichever way you wish, whether it’s with an expensive meal or a gift to yourself.
Final Thoughts
Remember, confidence is something that you might need to fake until you make it. It’s a process that takes time. Be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress along the way. With dedication and perseverance, you can achieve your fitness goals and feel empowered.
